Riverside County Voters to Decide Future of Half-Cent Transportation Sales Tax

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — Riverside County voters will decide November 3 whether to extend an existing half-cent sales tax that helps fund road repairs, freeway improvements, and public transportation throughout the county.

The proposal, appearing on the ballot as Measure A, would continue the county’s current transportation sales tax beyond its scheduled expiration in 2039. According to the Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC), approval would not increase the existing sales tax rate.

The measure is expected to generate approximately $280 million annually for transportation projects and services.

Where the Money Would Go

Under the Riverside County Transportation Improvement Plan, revenue would support three primary areas: local streets and roads, highways and regional transportation corridors, and public transportation.

Local governments would continue receiving allocations for eligible transportation improvements, including street maintenance and repairs.

Regional projects could include improvements along Interstate 10, Interstate 15, Interstate 215, State Route 60, State Route 91, and other major corridors.

Public transportation funding would also continue, supporting services used by commuters, seniors, students, and residents who rely on buses and other transit options.

What Does It Mean for Local Communities?

Measure A funding already plays a role in transportation improvements across Riverside County.

RCTC reports that between 2010 and 2023, the following communities received these approximate amounts in local streets and roads funding:

CommunityFunding
Riverside$110.7 million
Moreno Valley$60.4 million
Hemet$26.8 million
Menifee$26 million
Perris$26 million

These figures represent historical distributions, not guaranteed future allocations.

What Happens if Voters Reject the Measure?

A rejection would not immediately eliminate the existing transportation sales tax.

The current Measure A authorization remains in effect until 2039. A no vote would mean the proposed extension beyond that date would not be approved.

If voters approve the renewal, the half-cent tax would continue beyond 2039 until ended by voters, providing an ongoing source of transportation funding.

Oversight and Accountability

The transportation improvement plan includes requirements for auditing, spending disclosures, and accountability in the use of public funds.

RCTC says the purpose of the renewal is to preserve a dedicated local funding source for transportation needs as Riverside County continues to grow.

Election Day Is November 3

Measure A requires approval by two-thirds of voters.

Residents interested in reviewing the proposal can find additional information, including the transportation improvement plan, through the Riverside County Transportation Commission.

The decision ultimately rests with county voters, who will determine whether the existing transportation tax should continue beyond its current expiration date.
